What is a laser?
A laser produces a focused beam of light of varying
wavelengths. The different wavelengths affect structures by their optimal spectrum
of absorption peak. The Erb:YAG laser uses a 2.94 micron wavelength beam of light
that precisely removes decay and prepares the tooth without unnecessary removal of health
tooth structure.
What is the advantage
of the laser?
In most cases, the patient won't feel any pain so
there is no need for anesthetic. Also, because the laser is so accurate,
it pinpoints the decayed area and pretty much leaves the healthy tissue alone compared to
the drill, which is much harder to control. Third, you don't hear the loud whine
that the drill makes. The laser is quiet with only a soft, popping sound.
How does it work?
The laser's beam reacts with the water at the surface
of the tooth, causing the decayed tissue to vaporize.
Am I a candidate for
laser dentistry?
After a complete examination with x-rays, our highly
trained dentists can determine if the laser can be safely and comfortably used to repair
cavities on an individual basis. While 90% of the laser procedures can be
performed without needles, some teeth may be sensitive to water causing some slight
discomfort.
How long does the
procedures take?
Often times patients are in the dental care for
shorter periods of time since there is usually no need for needles. Patients do not
have to wait for the numbness to take affect and can return to work without the lingering
numbness.
Why is there less pain?
As the laser cuts it seals the nerve endings, and does
not create microfractures as a highspeed drill does; therefore, it's kinder to the tooth
structure. The laser creates less friction than the traditional drill, as a result
most patients do not require any type of shots to have the procedure done.
How does it compare
to the air abrasion?
The laser is based on a fundamental scientific
background. The laser targets the water at the surface of the tooth, causing the
decayed tissue to vaporize. Air abrasion is like sand blasting where healthy tooth
structure along with decay is removed as the abrasive particles abrade them. Soft
decay is more resistant to air abrasion and often times require mechanical removal with
dental instruments. The laser quickly and comfortably removes decay by vaporizing
the water particles contained inside. Lasers are more effective and
efficient at treating cavities.
The laser won't leave sand in your mouth either!
How safe is the laser procedure?
Lasers are used in our society in nearly every aspect
of our lives. Lasers have also been used in medicine for many years. The
Centauri Erb:YAG laser underwent vigorous clinical trials before approved. All
studies have shown that it is equal, or superior, to traditional treatment; not to mention
most patients preferred the laser treatment. Doctors, assistants, and patients are
required to wear safety glasses.
